Dear Mr Swale

Termination of Resource Consent Hearing

Thank you for your letter of 6 January 2000 with regard to the withdrawal of Timberlands West Coast Ltd from the resource consent hearing for the harvesting of the Crown's West Coast beech forests. I note your concerns over this matter.

The cessation of beech harvesting in the Crown's West Coast indigenous forests is Government policy. The issuance of the section 13 directive implements that policy. It reflects one of the policies by which Labour was elected into office, and also the concerns of the public of New Zealand that our remaining indigenous forests be protected.

As this matter is now before the courts, I do not wish to comment further at this time.

Thank you again for writing.

Yours sincerely

(Signed) Pete Hodgson
