- Item 1. 23 October 2001. New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark is at the APEC meeting in Shanghai and had a meeting with USA President George W. Bush.
She wishes to develop a bi-lateral Free Trade agreement with the USA, especially for NZ agricultural produce.
While President Bush was reported as being receptive to the idea, some reporters noted, in effect, that pigs might also fly. The chance that Bush could get such an agreement through Congress, especially in the face of the powerful farming lobbies, is practically nil.. They want to preserve their produce access to as much of the world as possible, and deny all access of rest-of-world agriculture producers to the USA domestic market. (Except of course when the rest-of-world producer is owned by USA companies).
